Three-Pointer: AUBG's Basketball Is Going to a Sports Festival

For the first time in years, AUBG will be represented at a cross-university sports competition. A men’s basketball team will be sent out at the ACG 2025 International Sports Festival at the American College of Greece in Athens.

AUBG’s Sports Manager Yasen Nedelchev shared that this is not the first invitation to a sports tournament that the university has received throughout the years. “This is a breakthrough in the university’s policies in a good way,” he stated.

The competition will take place between 2-4 April 2025 and AUBG's team led by Sports Coordinator Boyan Tenev will arrive on April 1 and return on April 5.

Tenev confirmed that an official announcement email about the competition will be sent to the  AUBG community before the tournament begins.

AUBG was invited to send basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and swimming teams. “We're going to compete only in basketball this year, but we plan for next season to bring as many teams as we have ready,” Tenev said.

Nedelchev clarified that there was not enough time to react and select students for teams in other sports this year.

The team will consist of 12 players who were chosen after a try-out conducted between students. “I observed the guys for two practices because we had 23-24 people show up,” Tenev said.

He also shared that he was pleasantly surprised by the skills and experience of the students. “It's a good base that we can build on in the future with those players,” Tenev said.

The coach stated that the key takeaway will be the experience gathered by the students. “We believe and hope that this is going to be just the first step of the development of this team and this sport in the university,” he said.

AUBG has organized transportation to Athens and has ensured food and accommodation for the team. “Travelling together, especially in a different country abroad, makes the group stronger, builds character,” Tenev shared.

The format of the Sports Festival has not been clarified yet, and AUBG has not been informed of the other participating universities. The only confirmed information is that there will be a total of six teams in the basketball tournament.

Nedelchev said that this competition has an important meaning for the students, especially with the increasing role of sports in their lifestyle. “This is also a great opportunity to promote AUBG abroad,” he shared.
