Wondering how to surprise your date for Valentine’s while keeping away from the cliche “dinner and date” routine? This year, throw yourself into spontaneity and challenge your adventurous spirit with a few perfect destinations only a couple hours away!
Destinations in Bulgaria
Bulgaria’s smallest town, Melnik, hides surprises like no other. This place feels like stepping into a different world, surrounded by sandstone pyramids, traditional houses, and family-run wineries. Wander together through the narrow streets, book a table at one of the taverns overlooking the pyramids.
While in the area, don’t miss out on visiting the Rhozen Monastery. This monastery rewards the drive with a breathtaking view over the Pirin Mountains.
Explore the incredibly well-preserved frescoes of the 13th century and the serene courtyard. The late afternoon light on the sandstone pyramids is absolutely magical.
Our next destination is Sandanski, a thermal town that offers a different kind of Valentine’s romance. It is known for its thermal springs and mild climate. Sandanski offers beautiful parks and several spa centers for couples to relax and experience the wellness treatments.
A bonus destination in Southern Bulgaria is the Devil’s Throat Cave located a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Blagoevgrad. For adventurous couples, this cave, situated near Trigrad village, offers an unforgettable experience.
The cave is named after the legend of Orpheus descending into the underworld to rescue his lover Eurydice.
It also features an underground waterfall, and a river that disappears mysteriously into the depths, while the sound creates an exhilarating feeling.
Cross-border Destinations
Lake Kerkini in Greece, located about 2 hours from Blagoevgrad is a wetland sanctuary that offers stunning natural beauty. In February, during prime birdwatching season, the lake hosts thousands of migratory birds, perfect for wildlife enthusiasts.
Beyond the scenic water-bound boat tours, the surrounding villages offer traditional Greek hospitality, with taverns serving fresh fish from the lake and boat tours across the water.
Nearby in Drama, Greece, Agia Varvara park ranks among the 60 most beautiful parks in Europe. The park features natural mineral springs, and the scenery is perfect for a romantic walk.
The city has an authentic feel with its elegant buildings and traditional kafeneions (traditional Greek cafes).
Valentine’s Day is not about expensive gifts or meticulous planning. This speacial day allows us to create a connection with the people we love, away from our day-to-day lives.
So, this Valentine’s, skip the crowded restaurants, pack a bag, and point the car to somewhere new. Do not be afraid to explore. Because this freedom is what love stories are made of.
