Representatives of the Sofia branch of one of the leading game development and distribution company Ubisoft visited AUBG on Wednesday, November 28th. They held a presentation and a Q&A session in the Red Room in MainBuilding at 7:30 in front of over 90 students. Ubisoft is a French-based company that deals with games on all platforms. The branch in Sofia opened in 2006 with 12 people and now employs over 120. The Sofia branch has a rich portfolio of games under their belt, including the latest installment of the very popular Assassin’s Creed series. AC: Liberation is a game for the PlayStation Vita handheld platform and is entirely developed by Ubisoft Sofia. This is no small feat considering that this is one of Ubisoft’s most successful franchises. The event began with a presentation from the Managing Director Ivan Balabanov who is an AUBG graduate with a major in Political Science and International Relations. He talked about the state of the Entertainment industry today. A curious fact is that the gaming industry is outselling the movies and music industries; it is the biggest and the fastest growing entertainment industry. Discussions then switched to issues of piracy and its role in gaming. Among the other speakers was the Lead Artist Biser Parashkevov who studied Accounting in college. He took the attendees through the process of designing the characters for the game and showed the staged that the team goes through to create them. Spass Kroushkov, also an AUBG graduate and a Content Director of Level design at Ubisoft, spoke about the research it takes to recreate historical monuments in the game and what liberties designers can take when altering the environments to suit the gameplay. Mikhail Lozanov, Technical Director Gameplay programming, was the last to speak and discussed the programming process for developing a game and the tools they use. Students were interested in what it takes to become a part of such a company. You can visit the Ubisoft website or Facebook page and see if there is an open position that suits you.
