AUBG has once more been placed among the top universities in Bulgaria according to the 2013 version of the national ranking system developed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education. In 2010 the Bulgarian Ministry of Education launched a Bulgarian University ranking system, which evaluates academic programs in accredited Bulgarian universities. The evaluation is based on more than 70 criteria, such as learning conditions, scientific research, employment prospects, relevance to the labor market, prestige, financial resources, the quality of academic staff, and others. The criteria have been built upon statistical data collected from a variety of sources, including sociological surveys, data banks, etc. The 2013 version of the system runs information on 51 accredited Bulgarian universities. The majors they offer are grouped into 52 professional fields. Five of them – administration and management, computer science and informatics, political science, public communications and information sciences and economics - are offered at AUBG. In 2010 only economics at AUBG was announced the best academic program in Bulgaria. In 2013 however, administration and management (business administration), public communications and information sciences (journalism and mass communication) were also rated number one in the country. Political science and international relations and computer science were ranked among the top, giving the first place only to Sofia University in these fields. "AUBG's business administration major being ranked best in the country is a major achievement, for which all students and faculty in the business department should be proud. Our aim as a department is to maintain the quality of our faculty and the academic standards of our students. I hope that these have been contributing factors to our success", said business administration Department Chair Robert White.

"Perhaps the most important difference between AUBG and other journalism programs is that we are very hands on." - said Melody Gilbert, JMC Department Chair. "We do so much more than just teach theory. Of course theory is important, but our JMC students are also practicing journalism and mass communications every day at AUBG, inside and outside the classroom. They are learning by doing and we challenge them every step along the way to be better so that they are ready for the real world when they graduate." Gilbert believes that despite being a small department, JMC is a strong one."We are a good mix of academics and enthusiastic practitioners who are passionate about what we do and I think our students benefit from that. I'm thrilled that JMC at AUBG is the number one journalism program in the country! I like to think that we are doing good work here, but it certainly is nice to be acknowledged by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education. All of us in the JMC department are very pleased and hope to continue to be the best in Bulgaria for many years to come."

AUBG alumni hold the lead in terms of employment prospects and incomes, while academic and residential facilities are considered one of the best facilities in Bulgaria. “AUBG has had a reputation for academic quality since it was founded in 1991 and it is gratifying to see that reputation validated in the Bulgarian University Rankings for 2013.” said AUBG President Michael Easton.
