Matthew Chandler, representative of Nestlè (the number one FMCG company in Bulgaria as of 2010), gave a lecture at AUBG on Wednesday, February 15. The event was organized by the Business Club.
Chandler started working for Nestlè in 2004 as an Control Accountant. Today, however, he is a Country Controller - one of the leading positions in the company. Although the lecture he gave was supposed to be on "Behavioral and Motivational Aspects of Doing Business Internationally," Chandler focused mainly on the approach and the attitude a young person should have for achieving his goal in business or any other sphere. Chandler explained that 10,000 people work in the Finance Departments of Nestlè worldwide. And from these people only 700 are considered as the "talent pool" - the truly capable ones. The main difference between the two groups is in their behaviors, he said. Expectations for your future life, career and goals are created long before being at university, said Chandler. It is most important to understand what you want and know your opportunities. The key, however, is to be realistic about these expectations. You cannot occupy a leadership position in a company straight after university - you have to work your way to the top, he added. Matthew Chandler also gave some tips for a successful interview. What matters most to him, as a head of Nestlè's Finance Department, are the people. This is why the essential qualities in prospective employees are the humility and the communication skills. He believes that first impressions do count and he precisely evaluates the behavioral approach of interviewees. In business nowadays, you cannot succeed alone, says Chandler. "It is not enough to have the technical skills any more. Professional skills are assumed, behaviors matter most," he added. Finance is the day job but a good employee has to be engaged in the whole company and always have a viewpoint or a recommendation. As Chandler believes, "long gone are the days when you will be told what to do." To make the audience feel closer to Nestlè and their culture, the speaker presented some advice from AUBG graduates who are currently working for the company. We would like to share them with you here: "Your diploma opens doors but is not a golden ticket!" - Business Administration & Economics, 2010 graduate "Be patient!" - Business Administration & International Relations, 2005 graduate "Talent will always shine through, take the time and effort to learn!" - Business Administration and Economics, 1996 graduate We hope you follow these pieces of advice and remember Matthew Chandler's words that what matters most is the positive approach!
