The Concept of Beauty
On Feb. 10 in Balkanski Academic Center was held a lecture by Georgia “Gene” Berryhill – a professor of Art, History, Design and Photography from the University of Maryland. She shared her passion for photography, art and the search for beauty. Doing a double major in Science and Art, two disciplines that don’t have much in common, only helped her in her work as an art photographer.
Berryhill is an artist and an art historian that shows her devotion for worldwide culture by recording documentaries. One of her most significant works is the documentary presentation “Transforming Landscapes”. It talks about the impact of industries on the environment and the society focusing on the outstanding culture around Cottbus, Germany that was devastated during the years of German Democratic Republic. She was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in a few countries including Bulgaria and she prompted AUBG students to apply for this program.
During the event, AUBG students got to meet her husband, Bob Berryhill, who is a founding member of “The Surfaris” – an American surf rock band where Georgia Berryhill is a bass player. They met in junior high school, decided to start a family and have two sons who are now part of the band as well.
“Art is [to] see things differently”– commented Professor Berryhill.
One of the things that get her ardent is photographing ruined environments, medieval sites, Neolithic artifacts and manuscripts. She has also photographed numerous frescoes. Currently she works on the creation of photo-drawing paintings as well as new frescoes, using techniques and materials from the Middle Ages.
On the question “What do you like the most about your favorite photograph?” she answered: “Once you answer this question you will find out a lot about yourself.”
