The  theater season at AUBG opened on Dec. 4 at the ABF Theatre with the independent theatrical project  “The Audition,” written by James Johnson. Three more plays are to be presented by students this coming week. The leading roles of the play were performed by Ana Milkova and Ayna Pirkuliyeva and the production was co-directed by Anna-Maria Ivanova and Rozafa Maliqi. The play proved to be what the official summary of it had insinuated, “Unconventional. Insightful. Dark. Ruthless. The age-old game of cat and mouse - with a psychological twist. Two characters: one we all love to hate, the other we all love to pity. The examiner and the examined. Both trying to answer one question - how far is one willing to go for 15 minutes of fame?” [caption id="attachment_24427" align="alignright" width="350" caption="Anna and Ayna after the end of the play"]Anna and Ayna after the end of the play[/caption]   “The Audition” established a row of controversial topics and questioned the morals of the modern entertaining industry.Going to a lot of auditions is definitely the most important part of building a career in the acting business. The question is: how far can you go in order to get a role? The plot of “The Audition” revealed a story about a young, inexperienced actress, named Lauren, who desperately wants to impress the director of a play which she is auditioning for. The particular director is represented by the character of a ruthless, sadistic lady, named Stella. Whether to show Lauren what is needed to be a good actress or just to amuse herself, Stella puts the young lady into a series of psychological and physical tests. Along the way, the provocative situations in which the two women participate, include topics such as drug abuse, sexual harassment and suicide.  After the end of the play, many members of the audience went to congratulate the two actresses and the two directors. An enthusiastic vibe occupied the whole theatre. Ana Milkova and Ayna Pirkuliyeva, the two performers, commented on their experience after the play, “The audience was awesome. A lot of things depend on the audience and the energy that they gave us when they laughed on our jokes, when they supported our acting, of course gave us even more energy to act.” Both actresses shared that they cannot believe that the whole play was over so fast, and they really want to perform it again and again. Initially they had some doubts if the plot of the play would be appropriate for the stage of AUBG, but after that, they decided, together with the directors, that it would be a good challenge. “The provocative moments were actually my favorite ones and that what make me like this script," Prikulieva said. "Also there are only two people. The good thing is that you get the main role and stay at the stage for the whole time. Two people only is something so different and so unique from anything else - there are only you and that person on the stage constantly.” [caption id="attachment_24425" align="alignright" width="398" caption="Anna in the role of Stella and Ayna in the role Lauren"]Anna in the role of Stella and Ayna in the role Lauren [/caption] Milkova also shared her feelings about the performance, “I was mostly excited, because it is a thriller, which is rarely seen at AUBG. It was definitely challenging, so I was like it is my last year at AUBG, it is time to do something awesome. And it is psychological which means there is a lot of thinking, it is not just actions.” Pirkuliyeva and Milkova agree that the happiness and the excitement that they receive after the end of each play in which they have participated are some of the strongest emotions that exist in human nature. They do not plan to continue their acting career as professionals, but both of them hope to find a good amateur clubs in which they can play. Nedyalko Deelchev, Associate Professor of Arts at AUBG, commented on the play from a professional perspective,  I think that the two directors did a great job, they were working very carefully with the text, they kept the major ideas of it. We can interpret this script in very different ways – from a very positive to a very freighting way. This play is very much based on what is the phenomenon of the actor – is the good actor really a puppet or just someone without personality. Very good work of Anna and Ayna, two actresses that have been in our AUBG theater for three years and this was just their next step to their self-development. Monika Koleva, a first-year student at AUBG, shared her impressions just after the play, "This was the first time I attended an AUBG play and I am simply amazed. The whole time I had the feeling that I am not at the ABF theater, but in city theater, where professional actors performed. The performance of all the students that took part in this unusual play was pure pleasure. Moreover, the plot was quite unique and questioned a lot moral issues. I hope I will continue seeing such dedication and professionalism in future projects. On Dec. 10, 11 and 12, the Beginning Acting and Intermediate Acting classes will present the projects they have been working on during the semester. During these three days of acting, students will perform the three parts of the play “Norman Conquests” by Alan Ayckbourn. Two different casts will introduce every part as an individual play, so students do not need to have watched the first one in order to understand the other two.
