Signs of a Senior Gift

Wooden benches and tables, swings and trees are all gifts made by the graduating seniors to the campus and students of AUBG. It is a wonderful gesture to leave something behind that enriches the on – campus experience of the remaining students and we do it every year. This year.. again! [caption id="attachment_6236" align="alignleft" width="227" caption=" source - www.aubg.bg"][/caption] Last semester, the class of 2012 provided a nifty “Scaptopara 1” sign for one of the buildings on campus (guess which one). It comes in Helvetica font letters with even some lights. That is so you know, as you are coming back from a “silna vecher” or a “strong night”, that this is indeed Scapto 1. That way you will have no excuse to mistake the building and go in someone else’s room. (I am not joking, this actually happened to a friend of mine.) So, thank you class of 2012! It is now turn for the class of 2013 to leave their mark. I wonder what they will choose. There are two other residence halls still waiting for a sign. I would feel left out at this point, if I were one of those buildings. So, let us get a sign for Scapto 2 then – that seems like the logical thing to do. There is just one tiny issue... What if we do not want to buy a sign? Are we obligated to continue what the class of 2012 has started? What if we want to build a statue of a griffin, or a statue of the new canteen guy (I’m just brainstorming here)? There is no defined process on how to select the gift. Last year's chair of the Commencement Committee Xhensila Reka formed a subcommittee headed by Emel Visha to take care of that. The committee brainstormed possible ideas and an online survey only for seniors was developed where they had an option to make their own suggestions. Based on the survey, the committee chose the best ideas and discussed them with the head of the Development Office. After  they received approval, they met several times with Pavlina Pavlova to discuss budget and technical issues. The commencement committee is not yet formed and we do not know how things are going to turn out. However, as history teaches us, a nice rebellion can fix anything. I have my pitchfork ready in the closet. So, what do you think? Do we buy a Scapto 2 sign because we have to at some point, or do we do our own thing and leave our own unique mark? Furthermore, if we do decide to rebel, what would we buy?
