PolCa, one of the preferred places for a quick bite and rest for the AUBG students, celebrated their first birthday this Friday, Oct. 2. Locals and students came by the café & deli throughout the whole day to commemorate the occasion. While everyone was busy with work, they served and entertained the constant crowd gathering in front of the café. The highlight of the day was the birthday cake that they gave away to both customers and random passers-by. “I love the owners," Desislava Panayotova, a fourth-year student at AUBG, said. "During this one year I felt that they became a part of my AUBG experience. Even if I don’t want to buy anything, I will just go there to chat with the people.” Elwira, one of the owners, expressed her gratitude to the AUBG community. She and her colleagues were very touched by the support of the students. “We love you all, students at AUBG," she said. "Thank you for choosing us and thank you to the people who graduated for keeping us motivated.” While some mentioned PolCa and its friendly and warm atmosphere, others related to the food. “I can’t say that I’m a regular customer but I really enjoy everything I order from there,” Polina Bolotova, a third-year student, said. “I am sure, however, that I would go there more often if it included more items on the menu, as I don’t like eating sandwiches and soups every day.” However, PolCa has its critics too. Alexander Parunov, a third-year student, commented on the prices. He said, “I don’t really like PolCa because I think that it’s overpriced for a small town in Bulgaria.” [caption id="attachment_28621" align="alignleft" width="640"]Liz and Elvira inside the cafe Liz and Elwira inside the café[/caption] The café came to existence one year ago. The name PolCa relates to the abbreviations of Poland and Canada – where Elwira and Liz come from, respectively. “We wanted the name to be memorable and short, and when you hear it to just “click,” Liz said. “And PolCa was perfect, but it is not the dance polca!” The concept for the café and deli persisted for a long time in the owners’ minds. But essentially they chose Blagoevgrad because of Kiro and Drago – Liz and Elwira’s husbands. “We wanted to bring something new to the city and this is what we like to do – cooking and serving with a smile to students and not only,” Elwira said. PolCa will continue working in Blagoevgrad for now. “We have huge plans, which we don’t want to reveal yet and they involve a lot of work and money,” Elwira said. “We like it a lot. We made one year and we are hoping to turn that number times 10.”
