Maia Parmakova, Director of AUBG's Academic Advising Center, took a semester of parental leave in order to devote her time and attention to her 5-month-old adopted daughter, Nadezhda. She became the coordinator of the Advising Center in 2004. After more than 10 years of commitment to the university, she decided to take a break and devote more time to her child. Parmakova is thankful to her colleagues and the Student Advisers’ team for the support shown during the adoption process and afterwards. Despite her official leave, Parmakova will continue to give the AUB106 course once a week. In the meantime Assistant Professor of Political Science Maria Tzankova agreed to take the lead over the Advising Center. “Everything is in place for another successful semester for the Advising Center: a group of enthusiastic student advisers, Prof. Maria Tzankova as an experienced faculty adviser plus well developed policies and procedures to guide the work," Parmakova said. "Together we planned the activities for the spring semester in advance [caption id="attachment_11033" align="alignright" width="249" caption="Image from Victoria Antonova's Personal Archive"][/caption] and assigned responsibilities so that the team feels conformable and prepared for the new semester. I know they will do a great job!”
The Learning Center’s opening event, a traditional AUBG Challenge game, took place on Jan. 28, marking the start of the new academic semester. Both the Advising and Writing centers are to be moved to the new student center, where the experienced staff members will continue to render various academic and advising services.
