JMC Rocks Awarded Distinguished Students
For a 13th consecutive year the same passion brought together students, professors, and alumni. The love for journalism drew students and faculty to the JMC Rocks 2016 reception at Piano Bar Unlimited on April 21.
Following tradition, the host of this year’s event, Sorin Petrov, awarded the most distinguished members of the student media on campus. Afterward, a party which welcomed all students took place. Similar to previous years, the event was organized by JMC students.
“Organizing it was a pretty stressful experience since both of us [the organizers] are seniors who are very short on free time this semester, but I think overall it turned out to be a success,” Ani Devdariani, a fourth-year student and one of the organizers, said.
This year’s awarded students included Maria Tzvetkova (Radio Aura), Sophia Bunza (AUBG Documentary Movie Club), Fatme Tsiko (AUBGTalks), Diana Elagina (InFocus), Sabina Peycheva (AUBG Daily), and Ekaterina Tchelidze (SPJ AUBG Chapter). Along with the honors, the three new JMC Professor, Giles Timms, Cyle O’Donnell, and Laura Kelly, were also introduced.
“I had asked them to vote for who they wanted to receive the award and I had no idea that they would select me as the worthy one. It was a huge honour and I am more than flattered to have this wonderful group of people think so highly of me,” Sofia Bunza, a second-year student, said after receiving the prize.
“As it was my first time at JMC Rocks, I was amazed by the positive vibe and energy of the people in the depratment. After recieving the Best Aura Member award, I was extremely honored to be chosen among all those bright and creative people that Aura’s family has,” Maria Tzvetkova, a third-year student, said.
Apart from displaying the traditional senior profiles, this year’s event emphasized on Professor Dinka Spirovska’s leaving. The head of the JMC department, Professor Lynette Leonard, delivered a speech thanking Spirovska for her contribution to the JMC department and AUBG as a whole.
