Four teams participated in this year’s Griffinbowl.  The tournament took place on the “Porterfield” baseball stadium on 7 – 8 April. The format of the tournament was flag football – 8 vs 8.

This Saturday and Sunday the sun was shining on the arena where AUBG Griffins, Sofia Bears, Sofia Warriors and Sofia Hawks clashed to show which the best team is.

The first day started with Griffins and Hawks winning over the newly established team of Warriors. Bears then crashed the youngsters from Hawk, but their game against Griffins went on a little bit differently. The Griffins’ offense was very productive and scored 3 touchdowns. But Bears used the mistakes in the defense and scored 29 point, thus clinching the victory over the hosting team.

A true thriller was the last game of the day. The young guns from Hawks faced the Griffins. The game finished tied with both teams scoring 2 touchdowns in the regular time. After two overtimes, however, Griffins’ elusive running back Mixa Oleshchuk scored the game winning touchdown after a laser accurate pass from the quarterback, thus sending their team to the final.

The second day continued on schedule. Bears played a game against Warriors. The game was more friendly than competitive and Bears won their third victory. After that the small final took place, where the young team of Hawks won over the Warriors and took the third place in the tournament.

The final was the most productive game during the tournament. Overcoming the tiredness of the previous day, Griffins faced the more experienced team of Bears. After a show of offensive plays from both of the teams, Sofia Bears won the tournament outscoring the hosting team 44 : 27.

After asking the head coach of Sofia Bears why weren’t they happy with their victory, he said: “Winners do not have the energy to shout and cheer, because they have given everything on the field.”
