The AUBG Olympics 2014 was held this Sunday, April 27, at Bachinovo Porter baseball field concluding the Great Week at AUBG with a spectacular sports event, which went against the odds of any weather forecast. It involved competitions in 15 disciplines, special demonstrations and many prizes for the best participants and official lighting of the Olympic fire. An active fund collection campaign for Ema, 14-months old and suffering from infantile epilepsy, was going on throughout the entire day. Olympics 2014 was officially kicked off on Saturday, April 26, with the first ever marathon organized at AUBG. The 3.8 km marathon is the newest discipline added this year, which the club is promising to develop further for future editions of Olympics. All the rest of the competitions went normally on the originally announced date of the main event (April 27), despite the high possibility of unfavorable weather conditions and the rumors about cancelling that were going around campus. Special guests were Vladimir Nikolov, captain of the Bulgarian national volleyball team, and Camillo Placi, coach of the national team. Nikolov took part in a friendly volleyball match as a member of an AUBG student team. Due to the high interest last year, the organizers brought back an 8-metre climbing wall. A demonstration in acrobatics was performed by an acrobatics children’s group from Blagoevgrad. For the first time this year the crew lit a torch to signify the Olympic fire and walked around the entire field carrying it. The fire theme continued with a fire spinning demonstration by AUBG-ers Lora Dineva and Chanko Valev. In addition to the traditional cups, medals and Olympics apparel, the awards ceremony offered some extreme prizes like vouchers for paragliding, paintball, carting and ATV rides. “Despite all the problems we had with the weather and cancelations of some of our plans, we managed to organize ourselves, keep the spirit up and make the event happen. I am happy to say that I am proud of every single Crew Member for their determination to make the AUBG Olympics 2014 happen the way it did. We did follow the fire,” said Ivailo Yanev, president of AUBG Olympics, after the end of the awards ceremony. [gallery columns="4"]
