Ditch the traditional CV with Enhancv
Personal information? Check. Professional experience? Check. Qualifications and skills? Check. Resume sent. Then a constant staring at an empty mailbox, hoping to receive the awaited job or internship offer. A decisive element in the process of attracting employers and convincing them in your qualifications is the crafting of your CV. On Mar. 14, the Aspire Center gathered representatives from Enhancv – a leading CV builder company that helps people all over the world create the perfect resume. The lecture consisted of top tips in building a CV and continued with a Q&A session and a workshop, where students had the opportunity to receive a professional evaluation on their resumes. The Enhancv representatives provided a special promo code to the AUBG community, which would let students build their CV in the website for free. The guest speakers also gave information about internship offers for the summer of 2017.
Driven by the idea to ditch the traditional CV, a member of the Enhancv’s Media Relations and Editorial team – Tatiana Rehmova introduced the main tips to create a stellar resume and escape from the ordinary appearance of your “curriculum vitae”. Originally from Slovakia, she now lives in Bulgaria and has experience in copywriting and natural medicine.
“Initially I had the pleasure to communicate with Enhancv to arrange the talk, which became a workshop, because the students asked a lot of questions and interacted with the speaker about their own CV-s. Enhancv is actually a start-up project,” shared Preslav Vachev, a first-year student.
Rehmova started the presentation by addressing a main problem with CVs by showing a comparison between two resumes – the more commonly used Europass CV and the Enhancv one. Rehmova visually highlighted the differences and stated the results of using the regular Europass CV.
“This happens around 15 000 times per day. People download and create this kind of resume on a daily basis and 95% of such CVs are being rejected,” she said. “At Enhancv we are trying to tackle this problem and we found that the quality, both verbal and visual, is the key for a stellar resume,” Rehmova clarified.
The Enhancv builder stands out with various sections, which emphasize the talents and experience of the candidates. She stressed on the importance of choosing the company where the person wants to work or intern, before even starting the resume.
“It is because you need to see their values, their mission, you need to know if you like them and why exactly do you want to work there,” shared Rehmova.
According to her, that part of the process is needed in order to ease the work when creating the resume. She advised candidates to carefully think and choose what is important to write in their CVs through checking the job requirements and “About” page of the desired employer. That gives candidates a grip of the kind of employees and language of the company.
“Keep in mind that it will take time. You will get there,” commented Rehmova on the much needed patience in the process of application. To make it easier for recruiters to spot the best match for the positions they offer, candidates should not forget to use the PDF format for the resume, which would open on different computers and devices. Applicants have to also name the file properly, for instance “CV_Elon_Musk”.
“What is interesting about Enhancv as a whole is that they introduce a new vision of the CV itself. The one we have and we all know is the Europass, which has gradually become really dull, even among employers. The new Enhancv CV is a lot more colorful and interactive,” commented Vachev.
Rehmova continued with 5 tips on make the resume engaging and inviting, both in content and appearance.
Tip #1 – Essentials
The essentials, such as contact information and small biography, are included in the personal section positioned on top of the CV. It should include the full telephone number, because many employers prefer to call, hear how applicants react to questions and distinguish what kind of person the candidate is. People have to remember to put the code of the country in front of the number. The personal information should also contain the email address, preferably by a some well-known provider such as gmail and yahoo. Applicants should also carefully choose their email names in order to avoid looking unprofessionally. Rehmova stated that the candidates can include whatever “will put them in a good light, whatever will prove to the employer that they are worth meeting”, for example personal websites or blogs and social media platforms – Linkedin and Twitter. Another important aspect is the short biography.
“It basically frames how they think about you. What you should write is how you feel about yourself as a professional and a person as well,” shared Rehmova.
Tip #2 – Non-paid/non-work experience is as important
“As students we thought ‘I don’t know what to write in my resume, because I had never worked, I have never had a real job. What experience am I going to write in?’,” began Rehmova by relating to all students attending the event. “But the relevant experience is anything that is paid or unpaid. It could be an internship, it could be volunteering, it could be project that you have done at the university, some positions that you held in different clubs,” she explained.
Applicants should also show achievements and impact, rather than simply list their responsibilities. If they include what they are most proud of or any experience, they always have to specify the accomplished work in those positions and mention numbers and percentages. She also gave an example with a candidate, applying for a job as a marketing assistant. When most of the job ads state some requirements, the applicant should give specific and valid information about the influence or work related to those requirements.
Applicants should add courses, awards and medals that are relevant to the job description. If they have a certification or licenses, for instance a teaching or First Aid certification, they should also include it in their resume.
Rehmova mentioned that one of the specific parts of Enhancv for resume building is the “Most Proud of” section.
“This section helped me get a job at Enhancv, not my experience section,” she confessed. “Our research proves that this is one of the most important parts on the resume, because it reviews most of your experience, personality and passions, all at once. Just sit and think what is your greatest life accomplishment. This is also the hardest section of your resume, so don’t give up easy on it,” affirmed Rehmova.
Tip #3 – Show the real person behind the resume
Applicants have to show themselves both as professionals and individuals. This section at the Enhancv builder secures the culture fit.
“Company culture is the personality of the company,” explained Rehmova. She compared the traditions at Enhancv with a monthly breakfast of the employers – including discussions and emphasizing that every company tries to secure their cultural fit. “That means that they hire people that are similar to each other, that have the same values and that means that they will work together very well,” shared Rehmova. Applicants should not only show who they are, but also reveal their values. As an example she mentioned some books that have changed the applicant’s perspective or motivated him to be better.
There is also a section called “A Day of my life”, where people can show how they spend their day. Such parts of the CV are important, because they make recruiters excited to meet the applicants.
“Actually Spotify hires based on this,” said Rehmova and elaborated by mentioning one case with a girl, who got hired as a strategy manager in Spotify with the help of the Enhancv resume, where the book section in specific got the attention of many employers.
Tip #4 – Avoid common mistakes
Rehmova advised to be careful with
type-o’s, which are the most common mistakes. The best way to avoid this is if someone else takes a look at the CV or the author reads it again the next day, in order to spot something that he did not see before.
Rehmova continued with other problems such as lies on the resumes, which revolve around languages and technology expertise fallacies, understating or overestimating, not reading job requirements or additional information about the company. She also said that stating only responsibilities and no accomplishments is a really big mistake, because using the latter helps you stand out and show what otherwise would not if you
were not in that position. Applicants should share only the important information from their experience.
“Try to think what is relevant for the company, for the job description,” stated Rehmova. Some applicants do not try to see what Human Resources will understand from their CV. If they do not inform themselves about the company and create a ‘universal’ resume, sending to all jobs, it becomes very obvious for employers.
So that such mistakes could be avoided, the Enhancv CV builder includes two features – feedback from friends and content analyzer. The first allows you to receive opinions and comments about your CV, whereas the latter reminds you of cliché words, repetitions, missing data, detects mistakes and makes suggestions to improve the resume.
Tip #5 – Customize your CV for each job you apply to.
“The company wants to see that you have done your research and you see what they do and you show how exactly you can help them through all your experience and personality,” said Rehmova.
In order to customize it, applicants can use keywords the companies used in job description and tone of voice the recruiters use in their blog or social media.
Rehmova continued with final tips, which included conciseness of the CV, accurately evaluating the fitting sections and standing out with colors. Users should not try put themselves in all sections in the builder, but rather only in those that they are confident.
“Consider your sections based on the information you acquire about the company,” specified Rehmova.
Another important aspect is to keep the resume up to two pages long. “If you can’t sell yourself in one or two pages, they are not going to scroll down three other pages,” confessed Rehmova. Applicants should try to go to the company’s website, not only on job searching sites, and email directly the desired team.
After all the tips and suggestions, Rehmova introduced the two summer internships, offered by Enhancv. One of them – a social media internship and a customer success internship. AUBG students can apply and send their CVs to email@example.com , until the end of March, if they are interested in joining the Enhancv team.
Using a picture in your CV is not necessary. Nonetheless USA law makes it
illegal for the recruiter to require the candidate to share anything that could tell them something about your gender, race etc. However, checking the company information can give a better sense if the applicant should share a picture.
“We have a lot of customers, who found a job,” shared Rehmova about the success of the Enhancv resumes. “There are people from Microsoft, who reached out to us, and loved the builder. The lady, who got hired in Spotify, said she went to a tech conference, where companies like Bloomberg told her that this resume is the future,” she continued.
Some Enhancv users were complaining about a unsuccessful job hunt with the resume, but Rehmova stated that “it is up to you what you create and what you feel represents you the best and of course you need a bit of luck.”
“No resume builder is going to get you a job, but ours shows your personality and it brings a culture fit that many companies are looking for nowadays,” explained Rehmova.
In order to avoid using cliche words, she suggested to explore the Internet to check synonyms, read some articles. An example is the Forbes magazine career column, because people have all the resources they need out there.
The Enhancv team continued with a small workshop, where they evaluated some students’ resumes and gave some feedback and suggestions for improvement.
“What made the biggest impression during the lecture for me was the culture fit section from the CV – it shows a complete day of your life and how you spend your time,” shared Vachev. “They gave to each AUBG student a free pass to use Enhancv until the Apr. 15,” he added.
The promo code that students can use to create a Enhancv resume for free is: #AU03BG14. Rehmova encouraged students to approach her with questions regarding their CVs or if they are in need of help. They can reach her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
