On Thursday, November 8, the Student Government sent an email to all students regarding a proposal to change the Academic Calendar for Spring semester 2013. In addition to adjusting the finals week to avoid the Bulgarian national holidays and Easter, which coincide in 2013, it is suggested that all exams will be conducted in four days instead of the usual five. The proposal was sent to the SG by the Calendar Committee and the Administrative Council. According to them, the classes before the finals week will end on Thursday, 25 April instead of Friday, 26 April. In this way students will have two days at their disposal to prepare for the exams. The finals will start on Sunday, April 28 and will end on Wednesday, May 1.This means that the exams will be done in four days. The finals that were planned for the fifth day of the week will be held in the evenings. Despite of the tighten schedule no group exams will be allowed. “They [the Academic Council] informed us that the dates from 1st to the 6th of May are non-working Bulgarian national holidays and that was the week that our exams were scheduled. So we had to come up with something, otherwise we have to postpone the final exams with one week, meaning that they have to be done in the second week of May. This will cause a lot of changes for the seniors with the commencement, with the state exams, with the prom night. And for the other students as well, because most of them are going on Work and Travel, and they have already either bought or booked tickets,” said Venelina Miteva, SG vice-president.
The change in the Academic calendar brings mixed reaction. ”I think the time isn’t enough for us to take the exams. I’m not happy with the new academic calendar, because it puts a lot of pressure on us,” said Hristiana Inkyova, sophomore first semester. And now with the merging of Friday and Thursday, I think the administration is going to figure out how to have the same amount of exams thorough all the days. We know people are stressed out during the exams. We cannot have an overload of three or four exams in one day,” said Miteva. The proposal is not final and the SG is still working on it. Students are able to express their opinion in form of a feedback send to the SGe-mail. What do you think will be the most suitable decision?
