Come as You Are
Meet Sam Danailov, or as he describes himself, “the queerest person on campus”. He is a first-year student, of so-far undecided majors, from Blagoevgrad. And if there is one thing that Sam isn’t, this is boring.
“My interests are all over the place!” he says. Sam listens to rap and death metal, and immerses himself in “weird comics and fantasy books” in his free time. Yet another somewhat unusual hobby that he has taken up is knitting!
”I don’t know any guys that like knitting so there is that,” he shared.
Asked to describe his style in a word, Sam believes the best fit is “mess.” It is eclectic and creative, with a charming hint of the vintage punk style. One day he could rock a Bender jacket, the next – a checked Scottish skirt. Most of his fashion gems come from thrift stores.
BLITZ:
- Underdressed or overdressed? Overdressed
- Sneakers or formal shoes? Formal Shoes
- Shirt or T-shirt? Shirt
- Black or white? Black
- Hipster or swag? Hipster, I guess… It’s the lesser evil.
- Quantity or quality? Quality
- Spring or Fall? Fall
- Favourite color? Mustard yellow
What Sam finds hardest to part with are his binder and … a pair of Star Wars boxers! On the same note, he has a traditional Scottish kilt which he found in a thrift store. And despite being something that not everybody wears, Sam thought, “WOW, this might never be useful, but why not?”
His fashion guilty pleasure is wearing T-shirts from specific bands or movies. The nature of those T-shirts is very cryptic and only the very few dedicated fans would recognize and appreciate them. On the question of his most socially unacceptable piece of clothing he confidently said, “Considering that I am a transguy I am not supposed to wear the amount of bras and the amount of dresses that I own, but I can rock it, so there’s that.”
A person who Sam admires a lot is the late vocalist and bassist of New Generation Dimitar Voev. Sam shared that he finds inspiration in Voev’s outrageous and bold fashion style. Apart from the singer, Sam is also infatuated by Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer – half a fashion revelation, half an alter ego.
So, what is the key to his look? Sam does not believe in the conformist following of fashion because he finds it inaccessible and illogical.
“Do not take fashion seriously. Don’t blindly follow trends. That is the most stupid thing you could do, because trends come and go and if you try to follow them you will get lost and very broke,” he noted.
