While snowstorms in the US create problems for organization of sporting events and students from Niagara University get stuck in a bus, a relatively warm weather in Bulgaria does not prevent AUBG students from participating in AUBG Olympics’ Challenging Wednesdays. Last year AUBG Olympics' crew came up with an idea to organize a series of challenges to encourage students to be more active, to socialize, and just to have fun, according to Florina Ivanova, Vice- President of the student club. The chosen day was Wednesday, since there is not much going on campus on that day. From the very beginning, students were responsive and excited to participate, “we decided to continue the tradition this year,” Ivanova said. While competition is important, it is not the main goal. “It is about playing together in a good atmosphere,” Ekaterina Podramenskaia, one of the participants, commented. “It is a chance to meet new people.” As part of the initiative, two events have already passed: a table tennis tournament and a dodgeball challenge. More than 30 students participated in the table tennis tournament, where Podramenskaia took first place among women and Anastas Pushkarov among men. Petar Kerefeyski together with Pushkarov won the doubles. Dodgeball attracted even more students: there were 14 teams consisting of five people. A few dozens AUBGers went to support their friends. Needless to say, the desire to win created some tension, especially in the last 10 seconds of every round. However, every team took a different approach toward winning. While very few players were pursuing a personal goal to not get kicked out of the field, most of the students demonstrated team spirit and would always pass a ball to one of their partners, who had the best opportunity for a shot. Team Glezenata, consisting of Deyan Slanchev, Stoyan Iliev, Petar Kerefeyski, Aleksandar Garlanov and Ivan Nenov, won first place. After the challenge, the organizers rewarded the audience for their support and conducted a lottery in which students could win presents, such as a vouchers for beauty salon and more. As a continuation of the Challenging Wednesdays, AUBG Olympics introduced a new sports challenge this semester – Soccer Trick Shots – which will take place on Nov. 26. Ivanova commented that the event promises to be exciting for its participants and entertaining for the audience.
