On Oct. 17, the AUBG Health Center conducted its Annual Blood Donation Campaign. The initiative gathered 27 donors, both students and faculty. The Blood Donation Bank in Blagoevgrad, an independent department of the Blagoevgrad Hospital, helped with the organization of the event by providing a medical team and the equipment needed for the donation process.
According to Senem Konedareva, Health and Safety & Health Education Coordinator at AUBG, the campaign has had many donors during the past 25 years. This year’s initiative took place from 8:30 a.m. until 12:50 p.m. at the AUBG Health Center. The medical team was able to facilitate the donation process by accommodating two volunteers every 20 minutes.
“They (the donors) are very responsive. They are very responsible – they know exactly what they want to do and why they want to donate blood. They are responsible citizens,” commented Konedareva.[caption id="attachment_37040" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Senem Konedarova speaking about the campaign, Dimitar Bratovanov for AUBG Daily[/caption] Dr. Valentin Kormev, head of the Blood Donation Bank in Blagoevgrad, supervised the medical procedure. Prior to the event, the AUBG Health Center advised each of the participants to have a light breakfast before they come to the medical office. Once at the Health Center, each volunteer had to fill out a survey regarding his or her medical condition and take a general blood type test. The medical team extracted 350 ml of blood from each donor as well as an additional blood sample for test on characteristics of the blood type and sexually transmitted diseases. The collected blood will be distributed among hospitals in Bulgaria, depending on the demand. Konedareva pointed out that if the results turn out to be problematic, the health center will inform the volunteer of his/her health condition and the Blood Donation Bank will not use the blood provided by that donor. At the end of the event Konedareva shared that the most popular blood type, among the participants of this year’s campaign, was A. He shared that his fluid extraction took only five minutes and he felt physically well after the blood drive.
"As far as I know, my blood type is a universal donor type so I can transfer my blood to anyone who needs it. That's why I've decided to donate something that I produce day to day. Somebody may be saved because of my action,"said Bondarenko.[caption id="attachment_37038" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Donated blood by Dmitry Bondarenko, Dimitar Bratovanov for AUBG Daily[/caption]
