AUBG's JMC Department hosted its annual welcome reception on Wednesday, Sept.17, which gathered more than 50 students of all standings and featured President Aspegren as a special guest. The reception was opened by Prof. Melody Gilbert, head of the JMC Department. As usual, JMC professors introduced themselves and the subjects they teach.  Lynette Leonard, Mark Wollemann and  Dinka Spirovska spoke about the emphasis they put on the practical significance of the knowledge students acquire. Prof. Leonard said she aims at creating knowledge together with the students; Prof. Wollemann tries to be like an editor, which allows students to have more true-to-life experience, while Prof. Spirovska hopes her courses in visual communications will set a solid base for whatever field her students want to specialize in by teaching them about color choices, typefaces and images. This year, the reception was different due to the appearance of the new AUBG president, who came thanks to the invitation of Prof. Gilbert. President Kevin Aspegren stressed on the importance of the JMC Department both for the University and the students; he also expressed his gratitude to the highly devoted faculty, “This is what we all depend on as an institution.”   He encouraged the students to find a way to get engaged in extracurricular activities on campus. “The more engaged you are, the more you have on your CV, the better it is for you,” President Aspegren said. He also advised students to look beyond activities on campus, for example, to make the best of internship opportunities.  President Aspegren concluded his speech by wishing all JMC students to stay motivated and enthusiastic about what they do, since the enthusiasm of current students is the best recruitment for the prospective ones. After his speech, the presidents of the media on campus introduced their media to the audience.   The presented clubs included AUBG Daily, Radio Aura, Defacto, Purple, AUBG Talks, Documentary Movie Club, In Focus, JMC Rocks, Verve, More Honors Academy, AUBG Bubble and the Society of Professional Journalists' chapter at AUBG. Most clubs have their recruitment processes rolling and all students excited about being part of a medium are welcome to join. After the media clubs' presentations, Prof. Gilbert distributed special edition JMC Department stickers to all students present at the reception, and everyone took a group photo. Prof. Leonard presented a special JMC bingo for the students to play.
The final part of the reception took place in "The Hungry Griffin" restaurant, where students could chat to each other, meet JMC professors and the presidents of the clubs, and enjoy the refreshments - light snacks and brownies. The article was prepared by AUBG Daily's owls Alexandra Shatilo and Ivan Dzhambov.
