AUBG Musical 2017: “Rock Of Ages”
Hot – the word that best describes this year’s musical “Rock of Ages”. The show which kicked off with its premiere last Tuesday, Mar. 21, at Dr. Carl Djerassi Theater Hall, featured four acts in Blagoevgrad and now proceeds with a week-long tour around Bulgaria.
In the course of its ten-year-old history, The Broadway Performance Club has executed various high quality acts. This year they decided to to rock. “Rock of Ages”, a five–time Tony award nominee musical, unfolds as a rock fairy tale with plot twists, spectacular choreography, and legendary rock songs of the 80s, like “I wanna rock” by Twisted Sister, “The final countdown” and “Here I go again”.
Organizing the student musical took the effort of a crew numbering more than 50 people – actors, dancers, supporting actors, vocalists, organizing team, and a five-member band. Their work spanned over a period of more than seven months to recreate the famous Broadway performance “Rock of Ages”, put the finishing touches, and present this musical to local and national audiences for the first time in Bulgaria.
“Although I was kind of trained through these years, I didn’t expect it to be that hard, but it is totally worth it and of course I owe everything to my wonderful team,” said Denitsa Hristova, the producer of this year’s musical.
One of the hardest things they had to go through were the tough dance rehearsals. The crew had to rehearse for a daunting number of hours per week non-stop, in addition to taking singing and acting lessons. At the same time all of them had to manage with their classes and homework.
“I have been dancing for 10 years now but despite that the rehearsals were hard and exhausting for me, because we were rehearsing for 12 hours per week,” shared Natalia Chicu, a first-year student and a dancer in the musical.
Tsvetiana Zaharieva, the leading actress of the musical, is portraying Shereie – a young ambitious girl chasing her dream to be an actress. Even though Zaharieva has been a member of the club for four years and has participated in previous musicals as a singer and supporting actress, this is her first lead role.
“The Broadway Performance Club was one of the reasons I came to AUBG, it was a dream for me to be part of it,” commented Zaharieva.
The story’s unconventional nature, the plot’s unexpected twists, and the strong connection between the crew members are the key for the success of the musical and its influence over the audiences.
“My favorite part is when every time before we go on stage, we gather in a circle and we usually have this motivation speech and everyone is just so excited and getting hyped,” noted Hristova.
During this week The Broadway Performance Club is touring around Bulgaria. The crew is going to visit Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Ruse. Some of the actors are sharing how the connection with the audience is different for each city but most of crew agree that the best reactions they usually get are from the audience in Varna and Blagoevgrad.
