A Tie or a Bow Tie? Suit Yourself!
Have you recently walked around campus and noticed a well-dressed young gentleman passing next to you? His name is Vasily Kulev and he is the first Hanging in the Closet hero for this academic year. A first-year student at AUBG planning to major in journalism and mass communication and political science, he has a lot to show and is not afraid of the spotlight.
Vasily is 17 years old and was born in Russia, but his family moved to Burgas, Bulgaria three years ago. He is passionate about fashion and if he had to describe his style in three words, those would be: classic, elaborate and speaking-for-itself. Vasily sees himself as a more mature person in spirit than his peers are and he already has clear plans and ambitions for his future. “I like to think of myself as somewhat old-fashioned and retrograde, and that kind of differs me from other people of my age and I am proud of that,” he explains.
One thing that sets him apart is his fascination for classics – classics in fashion, in movies, in ways of behaving and perceiving the world. He points Steve McQueen, also known as The King of Cool from the 60s, as his fashion inspiration and a favorite actor, alongside Marcello Mastroianni and the eternal Audrey Hepburn. From the designers, his fashion radar points to Giorgio Armani and Tom Ford, who are the epitome of stylish men’s brands.
One thing in his closet that he cannot live without is his suit or the “summit of men’s fashion”, as he describes it. Something that he has too much of but cannot stop buying is shirts. And no, he does not own any sweatpants. The skeleton in his closet – the thing that everyone would be shocked to find in there – is a pair of ripped jeans. “I actually never wear them. I don’t know how they got there, honestly!”
Vasily considers himself more of an individual trend-setter. “Fashion is a very unstable thing. The point is not about completely following the fashion. It is about determining your own style and sticking to it. It is a two-way street.” We could not help but think that this young gentleman with fine manners and an even finer Swiss watch has an exceptional presence and charisma. He admitted that this often attracts the weird or astonished looks from passers-by, but he does not mind them. In fact, he is too busy pursuing his goals and enjoying life in his own way to care.
One thing is certain, when he shows around you’d better follow suit.
