A Mathematician with Style
Two of the major things that Kristiyan Iliev, a first-year student from Bulgaria, is keen on are mathematics and taking care of his looks. Have you ever thought that these two concepts are incompatible? Well, Krisityan, who is majoring in business administration and economics, proves that one academically concerned student can still care about his appearance.
Kristiyan defines his style as smart-casual. He never wears sporty outfits on a daily basis and prefers mainly simple, but elegant attire. Kristiyan explains the trends he tends to avoid are bright colors and T-shirts with big, “screaming” prints. Instead, he likes plain colors with which he can “play” to match them.
Kristiyan is not a big fan of shopping. Therefore, he usually just “fast and furiously” picks up some clothes, which he consequently combines according to his preferences. He does not pay so much attention to brands. Still, Kristiyan says that one of his favorite brands is ZARA and a lot of his garments are bought from there.
However, for him the only thing the price of which really speaks of quality is shoes. Kristyan considers his pairs of shoes the most important aspect of his outfit and he is ready to pay a lot of money for good quality. Having set a higher priority on his academic goals, Kristiyan admits that he does not have any idea about the current fashion trends.
Trying to keep it simple, Kristiyan hardly ever adds accessories to his outfits. According to him, accessories do not suit everybody equally and it takes a lot of courage to experiment with them. Despite that, Kristiyan values their use and uses as an example the actor Johnny Depp for his ability to touch up his outfits that way.
One big part of Kristiyan’s life was his membership in the Rotary organization. He has been part of the Interact club at his school in Sofia for four years and during the current year he has been part of Rotaract Club of Blagoevgrad at AUBG. The two clubs, in which he used to be an active member, are trying to help the needs of society in various ways with their own projects. Part of the traditions of the program are official events that happen several times per year, in which all of the clubs in different cities gather for official celebrations. Due to these events, Kristiyan has learned how to dress “smartly” and how to behave according to the etiquette.
Kristyan is not ashamed to say that he likes studying. His passion he found at high school, Sofia High School of Mathematics, where he developed his mathematical skills and analytical thinking. When he entered the University and started having economic classes, he found out that the mathematical background that he has developed through his high school years has a lot of applications in his current courses. Kristiyan explains that his philosophy is that “everything in the world is connected and even if the connection is hard to find, it is there. The more you dig, the more you will find.”
Kristiyan admits that he has never thought of the definition “nerd” as an offensive one. For him now is the time to explore and search for new knowledge and if that means to be a “nerd” or a “geek,” he is totally fine with it. “No matter if people say that knowledge does not come from the books, I believe it starts from there, and therefore I think that it is important to study and inform yourself,” explains Kristiyan.
To him, the stereotype that academically concerned people do not look well is not true. Kristiyan thinks that whether you do or do not care about your outfit depends entirely on the type of person, not on what he or she does for a living. Krisityan’s philosophy is that the way you look is the way to show to the world how much you respect and care for yourself. Therefore, no matter whether you are a mathematician or a lawyer, it is totally up to your self-respect how you would look.
