The Fall Orientation week for the new students at AUBG started on Monday, August 20. This year, the university welcomes almost 300 students from 28 countries. The start was given with the annual welcoming reception where President Dr. W. Michael Easton greeted the newly arrived students and their parents.
The Orientation week gathers all new students in programs, meetings and activities in order for them to get to know each other, make them feel more comfortable at the university and get oriented around the campus. Student Services and Residence Life have organized events that give information about the every day life at AUBG. A special workshop on Service and Involvement was held in the Balkanski Academic Center on Monday, August 20, where some of the clubs at AUBG were presented to the new students.
Another training, held on Tuesday morning, explained how important leadership and teamwork are in personal and academic life. On Tuesday evening, all new students were invited to enjoy a total of 60 fresh pizzas prepared by Dining Services staff under the supervision of Mark Waterhouse.
Among the freshmen is a girl who won 29 gold, silver and bronze medals in Math Olympiads and a Bulgarian boy who had attended the NASA Space Camp in Turkey. The university has also admitted a Macedonian guy, who holds the second place for Best documentary film and is the winner for Best idea in a National Film Festival competition in Macedonia, a golden medalist from an international basketball tournament in Istanbul, a winner in a youth volleyball tournament in Bulgaria, a sumo champion and many more.
This year, 77% of the Bulgarian students have been awarded scholarships for their academic success in high school. In total, 94 % of the newly accepted students received financial aid from the university with a total amount of $5,000,000, according to AUBG PR office.
The Fall Orientation week will end with the All-campus picnic on Sunday, Augsut 26, at the Porter Baseball Field. The event will mark the beginning of the new academic year at AUBG.Read more...
